My Aunt has MS and my uncle was doing the MS150. he asked me to come since i'm a bike nerd. my passion is singletrack, but i commute, and i love my aunt so i agreed. At the time the only roadbike i had was a 70's era 60+ cm Raleigh touring bike that i'd rebuilt. i love it, but i've got 27" legs and continually smash my chode. There was no way to comfortably ride it for 150 miles and i wasn't about to throw slicks on a mountain bike and huff n puff to keep up. My new mtn bike was a fetish, which i'd gotten very cheaply from ebay. i'd noticed that they'd had other cheap road frames as well. it seemed like an easy fix -get a SAC frame and throw the Raleigh components on it. New bike for <$100. Good deal, right? So i ordered it. the frame was a gorgeous pearly white and for someone used to 30lbs bikes, felt feather light. that was the last good thing i had to say about it for a long time. Chalk it up to inexperience, but i somehow imagined components were were universally compatible. i soon discovered i'd need to get: shifters, stem, headset, fork, front and rear deraileurs, cable guide, bottom bracket, cranks, rear cassette, rear wheel, tires and a chain.
Dirty Harry's got me a deal on a returned Bontrager Cyclo Cross BB and crank, which i dug cause i knew this was going to eventually become a commuter and my route has massive hills so who needs a big ring anyway. Also snagged and integrated headset, cable guide, front deraileur, seat post and stem. That came to around $220.
Biketek ordered me a sweet Surly fork and i picked up some tape -$100.
went to Free Ride looking for touring shifters but found some beat up ultrega's which i could fix easily, -$60
Kraynick let me know what an idiot i was and helped me assemble it. New wheel, tire, chain, cables, housing, cassette, -$150.
i was able to salvage my handlebars and saddle. i threw on a pair of Candies i had and an old Deore r deraileur.
so i went from a $100 bike to a $650 one. math was never my strong point. Otis is now my #1 bike. Threw on some fenders and blinkies and it hgets me to work in all weather, to the bar, exploring, etc.
Final Build Up:
white 50 cm Fetish SAC
Bontrager Stem
Raleigh touring handlebars cut to bullhorns
Surly fork

Shimano Ultrega f Deraileur
